Water-balanced lifts

The Folkestone Leas Lift is a grade II* listed funicular railway that carried passengers between the seafront and the promenade in Folkestone, Kent. Originally installed in 1885, it’s one of only three remaining water-balanced lifts in the UK and the only remaining cliff lift in Folkestone.

The drivers are very professional and happy to help on site.

“Firstly, I’m always delighted when we use R S French as I know from putting in an order to delivery and demobilizing at the end of our project everything will be smooth and professional . The units supplied are always like new and a comfortable environment to work in. The Leas lift project is a high media profile project and we required custom units in the Apex livery. R S French did not fail to deliver. The drivers are very professional and happy to help on site.”

Restoration

Restoration work commenced in early 2025, with London-based Apex Contractors handling the site preparation. Plans include:

  • Restoring the original lift system to full working order.
  • Renovating the historic waiting rooms and pump room.
  • Constructing a new café with an outdoor terrace to enhance visitor experience.
