Welfare Units: Cost Savings With Sustainable Welfare Solutions

Introduction to Welfare Units & Solutions
As the construction industry continues to be focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics, integrating sustainability into employee welfare is no longer optional; it is a strategic imperative.
A company’s sustainable efforts often focus on supply chains and infrastructure, while employee welfare solutions are an overlooked opportunity to make a substantial environmental impact. Choosing sustainable welfare isn’t merely about fulfilling a social responsibility; it’s a direct, measurable pathway to minimising your organisation’s ecological footprint.
This article looks at how choosing a sustainable welfare solution can have a positive impact on your company’s sustainable initiatives and help you to reach your ESG goals for 2026.
Let’s get started.
How can welfare help contribute towards a company’s ESG efforts?
At RS French, we’re proud to offer a growing range of eco-friendly, solar-powered welfare units. Designed for today’s environmentally conscious sites, our solar hire range provides all the essential facilities powered by the sun.
Our sustainable welfare solutions help to:
- Utilise renewable energy
- Reduce emissions
- Lower fuel costs
- Support off-grid working
A closer look at the cost-savings:
At RS French, we work with Groundhog, a long-established, privately owned company with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in South Wales. They manufacture site welfare accommodation units, and we have been working with them for several years.
One of the units that Groundhog manufacture for us is the i550. The i550 offers the legendary robustness whilst providing an enhanced green environmental solution.
Let’s look at the performance of the i550 along with the running costs and carbon emissions:

The i550 is designed to run in the summer months without the onboard power unit operating, offering up to a 100% reduction in carbon emissions whilst the generator is not in use.
The on-board power unit is only required to charge the batteries and starts and stops as and when battery levels dictate. Ensuring zero loss of power. You can expect zero running costs from the onboard battery and zero carbon emissions during the summer months.

During the winter period and at night, using the power unit will still be required; however, the generator runtime is reduced by up to 90% compared to traditional units. This unit is still highly cost-effective in winter months, with an approximate running cost of only £8 per week from November to March and carbon emissions of 13kg per week. *

Designed with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind, these solar-powered welfare units are built to deliver comfort, reliability, and reduced environmental impact on site.
From fabrication to final fit-out, every stage is carefully managed to meet the highest standards.
The RS French Sustainable Welfare Units For Hire
We have four units in our sustainable welfare range – Solar Pod, Solar Loo, RSF Solar Mobile + and RSF Solar Mobile XL.

Solar Pod: A compact, mobile energy station that uses renewable solar power to run, full site setups and even site requirements such as lighting or transformers.

Solar Loo: The Eco-Friendly, Off-Grid Toilet Hire Solution. Ideal for sites with no access to mains power, these units are powered by roof-mounted solar panels

RSF Solar Mobile +: When operating without the onboard power unit, and purely on solar, the RSF Solar Mobile + can deliver up to a 100% reduction in carbon emissions making it a smart, sustainable investment for modern worksites.
The RSF Solar Mobile + is the ideal choice for eco-conscious site managers seeking to meet carbon-neutrality targets without compromising comfort or functionality.

RSF Solar Mobile XL: With space for up to ten (10 – 12) workers, this Groundhog-built mobile welfare unit offers maximum comfort, carbon-reducing technology, and fast deployment, all in one smart, solar-powered package
Designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions dramatically, the RSF Solar Mobile XL features three high-performance solar panels that power the unit for most of the year
Conclusion
Choosing a sustainable welfare solution is a powerful decision that delivers substantial financial and environmental benefits.
As highlighted, these modern units revolutionise site operations by delivering zero energy costs and carbon emissions throughout the summer months, and only minimal expenditure during winter. This shift from continuous reliance on traditional, carbon-intensive power sources to highly efficient, optimised systems drastically reduces your long-term operating costs.
Ultimately, investing in sustainable welfare is not just an expense, but a strategic move that delivers immediate operational savings while future-proofing your business against rising energy costs and climate regulations.
